Echinacea Seeds: Coneflower Varieties for Borders and the Home Apothecary

Echinacea, also known as coneflower or purple coneflower, combines striking flowers with a long history as a medicinal plant. Echinacea seeds grow into perennial plants that form strong flower heads in summer and late summer, while also being valued as classic plants of herbal knowledge.

The genus Echinacea originates from North America and belongs to the daisy family. Typical features are the large flowers with a domed, often dark centre and ray florets arranged around it. The German name Igelkopf refers to this prickly flower centre, while names such as coneflower describe the distinctive flower shape.

The best-known species include purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), pale purple coneflower (Echinacea pallida) and narrow-leaved coneflower (Echinacea angustifolia). Echinacea purpurea in particular is known as a robust garden perennial and as a traditional medicinal plant. Depending on the species and variety, the flowers appear in purplish pink, pink, white, yellow or unusual green tones.

In herbal knowledge, echinacea is mainly associated with natural defences, the cold season and traditional plant medicine. Depending on the species and preparation, the herb, flowers or roots are used. For garden cultivation, however, the focus is not on medicinal use, but on the pleasure of a long-lived, vigorous perennial with historical significance and high value in the herb bed.

Echinacea species are also ecologically valuable. The flowers are readily visited by bees, butterflies and other pollinators. After flowering, the firm seed heads remain decorative for a long time and bring structure to naturalistic beds, prairie plantings and late-summer perennial borders.

As perennial plants, echinaceas require a little patience. Many plants only flower in their second year, but then develop into sturdy, long-lived border plants. They are especially well suited to sunny herb gardens, medicinal plant beds, wildlife gardens and mixed perennial plantings.
