Classic garden oregano is usually wild marjoram (Origanum vulgare) or a particularly aromatic form of it. It belongs to the mint family and is a robust, perennial herb plant with small leaves, a delicate scent and pink to purple flowers. In the garden, oregano combines seasoning strength, flower value and Mediterranean character in a particularly uncomplicated way.

In the kitchen, oregano is especially known for its strong, slightly resinous and peppery-tart seasoning. Greek oregano forms such as Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum taste particularly intense and are often used for Mediterranean dishes, grilled vegetables, tomato sauces, sheep's cheese, herb blends and classic pizza seasoning. Dried oregano often develops a particularly concentrated aroma.

Closely related is marjoram (Origanum majorana), which tastes milder, sweeter and softer than oregano. While oregano seems rather tart and wild, marjoram brings a finer, warm seasoning to potato dishes, pulses, soups, stews and traditional home cooking. Both plants are botanically closely related, but differ clearly in flavour, growth and winter hardiness.

Also interesting are oregano-like herbs that are used very differently from region to region. Mexican oregano, Syrian oregano or other species with a similar culinary function do not always botanically belong to the genus Origanum, but are used in similar ways because of their strong, spicy aroma. This category therefore brings together not only true oregano, but also related or similarly used culinary herbs.

Oregano is also highly valuable in the garden. The flowers are frequently visited by bees, butterflies and other pollinators. At the same time, the plant is drought-tolerant, sun-loving and well suited to herb beds, dry beds, wildlife gardens, balcony boxes and pots. Native wild marjoram in particular fits beautifully into naturalistic plantings.
