Mentha x piperita, as peppermint is called correctly, is surely one of the best-known tea herbs of Europe. It's perfectly suitable as a pure infusion and is very refreshing and tasty.
Of course, peppermint is also a wonderful and enormously versatile spice herb, e.g. for meat dishes, sweet dishes, cocktails, and many dishes of the Oriental and African kitchen - if lamb in mint sauce, yogurt dip, or mojito, many dishes contain their very special flavour only due to the seasoning strength of this plant.
It's considered a naturally arisen crossing of Mentha aquatica and Mentha spicata and has soon become a very common medicinal plant in Europe due to the comparably mild flavour and its effective essential oils and several other active agents. Peppermint tea is used against gastro-intestinal afflictions and biliary diseases. The essential oil has a cooling effect and can help with migraine.
The taste of peppermint also applies to chewing gum, toothpaste, cough candy, and various products for oral hygiene - from its leaves, without further ado, a good mouthwash can be produced, which is antibacterial and smells good. And, of course, it's the most important flavour component of peppermint liqueur, which is easy to make yourself.
