The Chinese celery ‘Chinese Pink’ is a rare, traditional variety with striking pink-purple coloured stalks, originally from China. Botanically, it belongs to the species Apium graveolens and is classified as a stalk celery type. The variety traces back to old Chinese celery forms that developed from wild celery and have been cultivated in East Asia for centuries.

Characteristic of ‘Chinese Pink’ are the slender stalks, around 20 to 25 cm long, with their unusual colouring ranging from soft pink to deep violet. The foliage is light green and finely structured. Sowing & Care of Chinese celery ‘Chinese Pink’

Sowing is carried out as an early indoor cultivation around 10 to 12 weeks before the last frost, usually from February or March. Celery seeds require light for germination and are therefore only gently pressed onto the substrate or covered very lightly. Germination takes place at temperatures of around 18 to 22 °C within approximately 14 to 21 days.

Once several true leaves have developed, the young plants are pricked out and later planted outdoors after the last frosts. The site should be sunny to partially shaded, with evenly moist, nutrient-rich and humus-rich soil. Waterlogging should be avoided. With sufficient water supply and regular harvesting, ‘Chinese Pink’ develops tender, aromatic stalks that can be harvested from summer through to autumn.
