Runner Bean 'Hestia' (Phaseolus coccineus) – Compact Ornamental Variety

Runner bean 'Hestia' is an especially compact and ornamental runner bean that stands out from traditional varieties. As a bushy runner bean, it does not require support and remains pleasantly low-growing, reaching a height of just 40–60 cm. This makes it an excellent bean for pots or balconies, as well as for raised beds, containers, or even hanging baskets.

A true eye-catcher, the bi-coloured red-and-white flowers not only provide ornamental value but also attract a wide range of pollinators. 'Hestia' is an edible bean with ornamental appeal; its stringless pods can be used fresh as runner beans or dried. As with all garden beans, it should not be eaten raw.

This robust variety performs well even in cooler or damper regions. It prefers a sunny position but will also tolerate partial shade. The soil should be rich in organic matter and well-drained, although the plant is generally tolerant of less-than-ideal conditions as long as waterlogging is avoided.

Sowing & Care of Runner Bean 'Hestia'

Sow directly outdoors or in pots from mid-May, once the risk of late frosts has passed. Sow seeds approximately 3 cm deep, spaced 10–15 cm apart. 'Hestia' does not require support and prefers a warm, sunny position. Keep the soil evenly moist but avoid waterlogging. No pre-cultivation is necessary. Harvesting can begin from July onwards, depending on the sowing date.
