Wallflower is one of the traditional spring flowers for sunny beds, cottage gardens and planters. Its intensely fragrant flowers appear, depending on the variety, in yellow, orange, red, violet, white or multicolored combinations and bring strong colors to the garden from April into early summer.

Wallflower Erysimum cheiri originally comes from Southeastern Europe and the eastern Mediterranean region. There it grows in warm, stony locations, on rocks and in cracks in walls. This origin explains its preference for sunny, sheltered spots and calcareous, well-drained soils.
In the garden, wallflower is usually cultivated as a biennial. After sowing, it first forms strong leaf rosettes that survive the winter and develop their fragrant flower spikes the following spring. Especially in combination with tulips, daffodils and other spring bloomers, colorful and insect-friendly plantings can be created.
The sweet fragrance, often reminiscent of violets or honey, makes wallflower a special garden plant. Its flowers are visited by bees, bumblebees and other insects. However, all parts of the plant are poisonous and not suitable for consumption.
