Artemisia Seeds: Mugwort, Wormwood, Tarragon & More

Artemisia varieties are among the most impressive herbs between the kitchen, herbal knowledge and the traditional home apothecary. Mugwort, wormwood, tarragon, southernwood and annual mugwort show just how diverse this plant genus is: sometimes finely spicy, sometimes tartly aromatic, sometimes intensely bitter and deeply rooted in cultural history.

The genus Artemisia includes numerous plant species from the daisy family. Typical features include aromatic leaves, essential oils, often silvery grey-green shades and a characteristic scent that can be fine, spicy, camphor-like, tart or bitter depending on the species. It is precisely this aromatic range that makes artemisia seeds especially interesting for herb gardens and plant collections.

In the kitchen, individual Artemisia species have a long tradition. Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) is a classic seasoning for rich, fatty dishes and is particularly associated with roasts, goose and duck. Tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus) shows the more delicate side of the genus and is known as a culinary herb for sauces, vinegar, fish, poultry and herb butter. Southernwood (Artemisia abrotanum), in turn, brings its own tartly aromatic profile to herb beds and scented gardens.

In herbal knowledge, Artemisia species play an important role above all because of their bitter compounds and essential oils. Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) is regarded as one of the best-known bitter herbs and is historically closely associated with digestive bitters, herbal extracts and aromatic drinks. Mugwort also has a long history in folk herbalism, incense traditions and traditional plant use.

Annual mugwort (Artemisia annua) has also become particularly well known. The plant is interesting from both a botanical and pharmacological perspective, but should not be equated with ordinary culinary herbs. With Artemisia, the individual species differ considerably in aroma, use and tolerability. Use as a medicinal plant should therefore always be considered species-specifically and with the necessary caution.

For the garden, many Artemisia species are robust, often drought-tolerant herb plants with distinctive foliage. They fit well into herb beds, dry beds, wildlife gardens and sunny plantings. Their appeal lies not only in the flowers, but above all in their scent, leaf structure, bitter-spicy aroma and long history as cultivated plants.
