Cacti are succulents - but not every succulent is a cactus

The term succulent does not describe a single plant family, but a particular way of life. Succulent plants store water in thickened leaves, stems or roots and can therefore survive longer dry periods. This ability has developed independently in numerous plant families.

Cacti, on the other hand, form a clearly defined plant family: the Cactaceae. Almost all cacti are native to the Americas, while other succulents also occur in Africa, Madagascar, Asia and other dry regions of the world. A typical identifying feature of true cacti is their so-called areoles - small, often cushion-like areas from which spines, new shoots or flowers develop.

Masters of water management

Cacti and other succulents have developed astonishing strategies for getting by with little water. Their fleshy tissues serve as water reservoirs, thickened surfaces reduce evaporation, and many species have a special metabolism in which gas exchange takes place mainly during the cooler night hours.

Spines, too, are far more than just protection against hungry animals. In many cacti, they also help shade the plant body and reduce air movement directly at the surface. In this way, seemingly simple forms create a finely tuned system for life in dry locations.

An astonishing diversity of forms and habitats

The world of cacti and succulents ranges from tiny, ground-hugging plants to metre-high columns, from spherical forms and branched shrubs to plants that look astonishingly like stones. Some store their water in thick leaves, others almost entirely in the stem or in powerful underground roots.

Their habitats are also more diverse than one might initially assume. Not all cacti grow in scorching hot deserts. Some species come from high altitudes, mountains or regions with cold winters. This is why there are indeed cacti that, under suitable conditions, can be cultivated outdoors all year round even in Central Europe.

Why grow cacti and succulents from seed?

Many cacti and succulents can also be propagated by cuttings, offsets or division. Sowing, however, opens up completely different possibilities. Especially with rare species, seed is often the best way to grow plants yourself in the first place. At the same time, each seedling becomes an individual specimen whose development can be observed from the very beginning.

It is precisely this slow transformation that makes sowing so exciting. From initially inconspicuous seedlings, typical ribs, spines, rosettes or other characteristic forms gradually develop. Depending on the species, several years may pass before the first flower appears - but in return, you accompany the plants through their entire life cycle.

Delicate youth, robust future

As resilient as mature cacti and succulents may later become, many of them are delicate in their youth. Seedlings do not yet have large water reserves and tolerate neither severe drying out nor the intense midday sun that adult plants of some species can withstand without difficulty.

When sowing, the first essentials are therefore even warmth, sufficient light without extreme sun exposure and controlled moisture. Only as they grow are the young plants gradually accustomed to drier conditions and stronger light.

Patience that pays off

Cacti and succulents are among those plants where patience is especially rewarding. Some species grow surprisingly quickly, while others develop only slowly over the years. It is precisely these differences that make raising them from seed such a special experience.

Anyone who sows cactus seeds or succulent seeds does not simply receive a finished plant, but can observe how a tiny seedling gradually becomes a highly specialised survivor.
