Early-ripening French netted melon for short summers

The netted melon 'Petit gris de Rennes' is a historic French variety known for its early maturity and reliability in cooler regions. It originates from Brittany around Rennes, where it has been valued as a robust outdoor melon since the 19th century. Botanically, it belongs to Cucumis melo and is classified among the classic netted melons, which are also known for their sweet aroma.

The plants grow with trailing vines and produce small, round to slightly oval fruits with a grey-green striped skin that becomes finely netted when ripe. The fruits reach a diameter of around 10 cm and a weight of approximately 400 to 900 g. The bright orange flesh is fine-textured, juicy and intensely sweet-aromatic with a characteristic melon fragrance.

Thanks to its compact fruit size, 'Petit gris de Rennes' is particularly well suited for smaller gardens, raised beds or cultivation on trellises. The fruits are mainly eaten fresh, for example as a dessert or starter, but can also be processed into sorbets or compotes. Sowing and care of the netted melon 'Petit gris de Rennes'

Sowing is preferably carried out in pre-cultivation from March to May. The seeds are placed about 1 to 2 cm deep in nutrient-rich seed compost and germinated at temperatures between 23 and 26 °C. After several true leaves have appeared, the young plants are carefully pricked out.

Planting out into open ground takes place from mid-May after the last frosts. The netted melon prefers a fully sunny, warm and wind-sheltered location with loose, humus-rich and well-drained soil. Even watering is important, while keeping the leaves as dry as possible. The fruits should be placed on straw, wood or stone to prevent rotting.
