Intensely purple heads, an old Italian heirloom variety and a striking feature in the vegetable garden

The purple cauliflower 'Violetta di Sicilia' is a traditional heirloom variety from Sicily that has been cultivated in Italian gardens for generations. Its compact, densely formed heads shine in the vegetable bed with a deep violet colour, making this variety a real eye-catcher in the kitchen garden. At the same time, it impresses with a mild, delicate and slightly nutty cauliflower flavour.

The striking colour is caused by anthocyanins, natural plant compounds with antioxidant properties. During cooking, the intense violet colour often changes to a greenish tone, while gentle steaming or brief blanching helps preserve part of the colour. Particularly when eaten raw in salads or arranged on vegetable platters, this colourful cauliflower shows its full visual appeal.

The plants develop strong, large leaves and produce medium-sized to large, compact heads. A particular advantage of this variety is that after harvesting the main head, additional side shoots with smaller florets often develop, extending the harvest period. As a relatively cold-tolerant and early-maturing variety, 'Violetta di Sicilia' is suitable for both spring and autumn cultivation.

Sowing & Care of Cauliflower 'Violetta di Sicilia'

In Central Europe, sowing is usually carried out indoors or in a greenhouse from March to April as an early start. The seeds are placed about 0.5 to 1 cm deep in loose, low-nutrient seed compost and kept evenly moist at temperatures around 18 to 22 °C. Under optimal conditions, the seeds germinate within about 5 to 10 days.

After germination, the young plants should be grown in a very bright and slightly cooler place to ensure compact growth. Once two to three true leaves have developed, the seedlings are pricked out. From mid to late April, the sturdy young plants can be transplanted outdoors. A planting distance of about 50 cm allows good head development.

Cauliflower is a heavy feeder and requires nutrient-rich, humus-rich soil and an even water supply. The soil should not dry out, especially during head formation. With sowing dates between March and June, the typical harvest time for this variety is between June and October, depending on the planting date and weather conditions. A sunny position, good soil care and regular nutrient supply ensure strong plants and firm, intensely coloured heads.
