Rare dwarf variety with unusual kernel colour

The sweetcorn 'Jade Green Blue' is one of the rare dwarf forms of sweetcorn and is closely related to the well known variety 'Blue Jade'. The plants remain much smaller than conventional sweetcorn varieties, reaching about 60 to 90 cm in height. This makes them suitable for small gardens, raised beds or larger containers on balconies and terraces.

The most striking feature is the unusual colour of the kernels. While the young kernels initially develop a whitish colour, they gradually turn steel blue to jade blue as they ripen. When cooked, this colour intensifies further and creates an unusual visual highlight on the plate.

The plants produce several compact cobs per stalk. In terms of flavour, this historic sweetcorn variety differs from many modern hybrids. The cobs are sweet but also have a rich and slightly savoury maize flavour that is especially appreciated by sweetcorn enthusiasts.

Thanks to its compact growth this variety is also well suited for container cultivation. The plants are particularly decorative in vegetable beds, mixed planting beds or large planters.

Sowing & care of sweetcorn 'Jade Green Blue'

Sweetcorn requires a sunny and warm location with deep, humus rich and nutrient rich soil. As a heavy feeder, maize benefits from a good application of compost before sowing. Pre cultivation can begin from April in pots. Direct sowing outdoors is possible from mid May once the soil has warmed permanently to about 10 to 12 °C and there is no longer a risk of late frosts. The seeds are sown about 2 to 4 cm deep and germinate within a few days at temperatures between about 18 and 24 °C.

The plants should be spaced about 20 to 30 cm apart in the row, with 40 to 60 cm between rows. Maize is wind pollinated, therefore planting in small blocks rather than long rows is recommended to ensure good pollination of the cobs. During growth, maize requires a steady supply of water, especially during flowering and cob formation.

The cobs can be harvested once the silks at the tip of the cob turn brown and the kernels release a milky juice when pressed. Sweetcorn reaches its highest sweetness during the milk stage, when the kernels begin to change from light to blue shades.
