Batavia lettuce seeds - robust lettuce varieties for summer

Batavia lettuce seeds produce particularly robust head lettuces with crisp, slightly curly leaves. Batavia lettuce is considered a cross between tender butterhead lettuce and firm iceberg lettuce, combining the advantages of both salad types.

Batavia lettuce belongs botanically to the species Lactuca sativa and forms semi firm, loose heads with wavy or curly leaves. The leaves are noticeably crisper than those of classic butterhead lettuce, yet remain more tender than iceberg lettuce.

Because of these characteristics, Batavia lettuce is considered a particularly versatile garden lettuce. It is more tolerant of heat than many head lettuces and still forms compact heads reliably even during warm summer weather.

Typical varieties include green Batavia lettuces such as “Lukullus” or red coloured varieties such as “Maravilla de Verano”. Many Batavia lettuces have decorative colouring and add structure to salads with their wavy leaves.

Sowing and growing Batavia lettuce

Batavia lettuce seeds can be sown from March to July. For an early harvest, the plants can be started indoors or in a greenhouse from February or March and later transplanted outdoors.

The seeds are sown about 0.5 to 1 cm deep and germinate at temperatures between 10 and 20 °C within one to two weeks. After pricking out or thinning, the plants should be spaced about 25 to 30 cm apart.

Batavia lettuce prefers sunny to partially shaded locations with loose, humus rich soil. A consistent water supply ensures tender, crisp leaves and prevents premature bolting.

Batavia lettuce in the vegetable garden

Batavia lettuce is considered a particularly versatile garden lettuce. Its semi closed heads are noticeably crisper than the soft heads of butterhead lettuce, yet remain more tender than the thick leaves of iceberg lettuce.

Many Batavia varieties are also very tolerant of heat and continue to grow reliably even in summer. This makes Batavia lettuce ideal for growing in the home garden and it provides fresh lettuce heads over many weeks.
