Butterhead Lettuce Seeds - Tender Butterhead Lettuce Varieties

Butterhead lettuce seeds are among the most popular lettuce seeds in the vegetable garden. Classic butterhead lettuces form loose, round heads with particularly tender leaves and a mild flavour. Many varieties grow reliably in cool temperatures and are therefore ideal for early sowing in spring.

Butterhead lettuce belongs botanically to garden lettuce (Lactuca sativa) from the so called butterhead group. Typical features are large, soft leaves with a fine, slightly “buttery” leaf texture. The inner heart leaves are especially tender, while the outer leaves are firmer and more aromatic.

Compared with other lettuce types such as Batavia lettuce, iceberg lettuce or romaine lettuce, butterhead lettuces are noticeably softer and more delicate in flavour. They are therefore considered the classic head lettuce for fresh green salads from the home garden.

Well known varieties include “May King”, “Attraktion”, “Buttercrunch” and “Marvel of Four Seasons”. Depending on the variety they are suitable for spring, summer or autumn cultivation and allow a continuous lettuce harvest over many months.

Sowing and Growing Butterhead Lettuce

Butterhead lettuce grows particularly well in cool temperatures and is one of the classic spring lettuces in the vegetable garden. Seedlings can already be started indoors or in a greenhouse from February or March. Direct sowing outdoors is usually possible from April onwards once the soil is frost free and sufficiently warmed.

The seeds are only lightly covered with soil and sown about 0.5 to 1 cm deep. Temperatures of around 15 to 18 °C are ideal for germination. Young plants with four to five leaves can be planted out in the bed at a spacing of about 25 to 30 cm. It is important not to plant the heart of the plant too deeply so that the heads can develop properly.

Butterhead lettuce prefers loose, humus rich soils with good water retention. The soil should remain evenly moist, as drought can encourage bolting. Adding compost before planting is usually sufficient, as head lettuce is considered a relatively light feeding vegetable.

Growing Butterhead Lettuce in the Garden

Butterhead lettuce is the classic head lettuce in the vegetable garden. The soft leaves form loose heads with a mild flavour and are particularly suitable for fresh green salads. Compared with iceberg lettuce, butterhead lettuces are much more tender, while Batavia lettuce or romaine lettuce develop firmer and stronger leaves.

By sowing in succession every two to three weeks, fresh lettuce can be harvested over a long period of time. Butterhead lettuce also grows very well in raised beds or larger planters and is therefore ideal for smaller gardens or for growing on balconies and terraces.

FAQ about Butterhead Lettuce

When can butterhead lettuce be sown?

Seedlings can already be started from February or March. Direct sowing outdoors is usually possible from April onwards once the soil is frost free.

Why is butterhead lettuce particularly suitable for early sowing?

Butterhead lettuce grows well at cool temperatures and reliably forms tender heads in spring. Many varieties are therefore ideal for the early gardening season.

How can you recognise the right harvest time?

The lettuce is harvested once the head is well developed but has not yet started to bolt. At this stage the leaves are especially tender and aromatic.
