What to sow outdoors in March

Sowing in March – when gardens start to come alive again

In March you can at last sow many vegetable varieties outside! Now’s the perfect time for robust early-starters like carrots, radishes, spinach and peas, as long as the ground is frost-free. Spring onions and cabbages can also be direct sown in your vegetable beds now for abundant crops later in the year.

Plants like tomatoes, that need warm conditions, should still be started indoors, preferably on a windowsill or in a greenhouse, so that they get a strong start ready for the coming season.

Flower lovers can also leap into action in March: Annual flowering plants like marigold, baby’s breath and cornflower can all be sown outdoors to provide splashes of colour in the garden later in the year.
