The netted cucumber 'Salome' is an open-pollinated, robust outdoor cucumber with remarkable versatility. Botanically, it belongs to Cucumis sativus and is often associated with so-called Sikkim cucumbers - cucumber types that change significantly as they mature. The variety is traditionally linked to Transylvania and is now maintained by specialised organic seed producers.

Typical of 'Salome' is its distinctive skin. Young fruits are smooth and green, later turning yellowish to brown and developing a clearly netted, cracked surface. The flesh remains firm, juicy and intensely aromatic - and notably non-bitter, even when fully ripe. A rare quality trait in cucumbers.

Depending on the harvest stage, the netted cucumber can be used in many ways. Harvested young, it is ideal as a salad or snack cucumber, semi-ripe as a pickling or spiced cucumber. Fully ripe, with a brown netted skin, it is peeled and used as a cooking cucumber and surprises with its good storage ability over several weeks. Thanks to its long harvest window and reliability, 'Salome' is a productive variety with history - from gardeners for gardeners.

Sowing and care of the netted cucumber 'Salome'

Sowing of the netted cucumber 'Salome' is preferably carried out in pre-cultivation from April onwards. The seeds are placed about 1 to 2 cm deep into nutrient-rich seed compost and germinated at temperatures between 15 and 25 °C. Once the second pair of true leaves has developed, the young plants are transferred into larger pots.

Planting out into the open ground takes place after the last expected frosts, once there is no longer any risk of late frost. The variety prefers a sunny, warm location that is sheltered from wind and rain, with loose, humus-rich and evenly moist soil. Cultivation on supports or trellises makes harvesting easier and promotes plant health. With regular harvesting, 'Salome' continues to produce new fruits steadily over many weeks.
