Mullein seeds - imposing flower spikes for dry, sunny spots

Mulleins are among the most impressive wild and garden perennials for sunny, dry locations. In the second year, tall, candle-like flower spikes grow from a low leaf rosette and, depending on the species, can reach well over two metres in height. Anyone who sows mullein seeds brings a plant into the garden that impresses with strong long-distance impact, a long flowering period and remarkable frugality.

The genus Verbascum includes several hundred species and is widespread in Europe, western Asia, North Africa and other regions. Many mulleins flower in bright yellow, but there are also species and varieties with white, violet or purple-red flowers. Typical is the upright growth with long flower spikes, on which the individual flowers open one after another. This allows the flowering period to extend over many weeks.

Mulleins love full sun, warmth and well-drained, rather poor soils. They are especially well suited to gravel gardens, steppe beds, dry perennial plantings, slopes, wildflower areas and natural garden spaces. There they are not only striking structural plants, but also valuable flowering plants for bees, bumblebees, butterflies and other insects.

Many species are biennial or short-lived. In the first year, they form a strong leaf rosette; in the second year, the tall flower candles appear. After flowering, many plants die back, but in suitable locations they maintain themselves through self-sowing. This creates lively plantings in which mulleins reappear again and again, giving the garden a natural dynamic.
