Okra is a West African mallow plant with long ridged seed pods, which are eaten as a vegetable or used for thickening soups and stews.

Okra tastes delicious boiled or stir-fried, a mild Mediterranean vegetable for pan dishes, Arabic cuisine, or Thai curries. This variety ("Clemson Spineless") is well adapted to the Central European climate.

Roasted okra seeds are a very good and tasty, caffeine-free coffee substitute. Due to the mucilage contained, okra is also suitable as a medicinal plant. Especially the root is used medicinally. Like with many other mallows, the fibrous stalks of the plant are used for the production of handmade paper and fibres in general.

When harvesting, humans with sensitive skin should wear gloves as the fine hairs on the pods can cause skin irritations. After washing them, this won't pose a problem anymore.
