In Europe the ancient Greeks were probably the first to write down their knowledge of medicinal herbs. Later this knowledge, along with the plants themselves, travelled northwards from the Mediterranean region to the gardens of medieval monasteries and convents. Many of these plants are used both medicinally and as seasoning. Often the plants are actually poisonous and the dosage level determines whether they heal or harm. This is why it’s vitally important not to experiment randomly with medicinal plants but always consult expert advice. Of course there are also many completely harmless plants that no home pharmacy should be without, plants whose effectiveness has been tried and tested down the ages.
