The Pleurisy root is a wild plant spread in North America. Because of its bright orange-red inflorescences, it's very popular as a decorative plant. It perfectly suits colourful herbaceous borders in the cottage garden and cuts in a fine figure as a
pot plant in the winter garden or on the terrace. The blossoms form outstandingly much nectar that especially attracts butterflies magically. In the English-speaking area, it's, therefore, also known as "Butterfly weed". The nectar is said to crystalize when the weather is really hot. Thereby, small balls emerge, which can be eaten as candy.

Native Americans used the root tubers against respiratory diseases (that's what the name 'Pleurisy' comes from). In homeopathy, the plant is used up to now.

Out of the fibres of the seed capsules, candlewicks had been wattled in former times.

Cold germination: Sowing time outdoors at the beginning of spring or in autumn. Alternatively, artificial stratification is possible. Mix the seeds with moist sand in a plastic bag. The bag must be kept warm and moist (approx. +20°C) for the first 2-4 weeks and then placed in the refrigerator where it should remain at a temperature of +5°C for 5-6 weeks. Then remove the plastic bag and observe regularly at room temperature whether the seeds germinate. Then prick the seedlings into pots and plant them out after the last frosts in mid-May.
