The tropics are more diverse than their reputation suggests

The term tropical initially only describes origin from warm climate zones. Yet within the tropics and subtropics there are very different habitats. While warmth and high humidity dominate in ever-humid rainforests, savannas and dry forests are shaped by pronounced dry seasons. In tropical mountains, temperatures can in turn be significantly lower.

The plants that grow there are correspondingly diverse. Some have large leaves for shady forest locations, others store water, form thickened roots or shed their leaves during the dry season. It is precisely this diversity that makes tropical plants so botanically fascinating.

Special species beyond the familiar tropical classics

The range may include very different species. Some develop striking flowers, others unusual leaves, fruits or growth forms. Some are classic tropical plants, while others come from subtropical or seasonally dry regions.

Tropical plants for rooms, containers and greenhouses

Many tropical plants can be cultivated here as houseplants or container plants. Others feel especially at home in a warm greenhouse or can be placed outdoors during the summer. Which cultivation method is suitable always depends on the natural origin of the respective species.

Tropical origin does not automatically mean that a plant permanently wants hot, humid and shady conditions. Species from rainforests have different requirements from plants from tropical dry forests, savannas or mountain regions.

Perennial in their homeland, often frost-sensitive here

Many tropical plants are perennial in their homeland but do not tolerate frost. In Central Europe, depending on the species, they can therefore be overwintered frost-free indoors, in a conservatory or in a greenhouse. Some fast-growing useful and ornamental plants, however, can also be grown as annual crops and sown anew each year.

Especially with rare species, sowing opens up the possibility of raising plants yourself from the very beginning and observing their development over many years.

Tropical seeds with special appeal

Growing tropical plants from seed is particularly varied because their germination strategies are just as different as their origins. Some species germinate quickly with even warmth, while others require a longer resting phase or special conditions.

Anyone who sows tropical plant seeds therefore discovers not only extraordinary species, but also very different ways in which plants are adapted to their natural habitats. Tropical seeds can thus give rise to a small collection that brings a piece of plant diversity from warm regions into the home, garden or greenhouse.
